A land written by rivers

Where the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna meet the sea, they built the largest delta on earth, and one of the most alive. Water shapes everything here. It carves the land into a thousand green islands, carries wooden ferries between them, and floods the fields each monsoon so the rice can rise. In the south, Royal Bengal tigers move like rumors through the mangroves of the Sundarbans, while river dolphins surface in the quiet channels.

This is old ground. Traders sailed here for the fine muslin of Bengal long before Europe knew the region's name, and empires from the Mauryas to the Mughals left their mark in terracotta temples, domed mosques and the ruins of once-great ports. In 1971, after a hard-won war, that long history became a nation of its own, and the date still carries weight in every town.

Inland the country opens into tea gardens in the northeast, Mughal mosques worn smooth by centuries, and the narrow, humming lanes of Old Dhaka, where rickshaw bells and the smell of street food fill the air. What stays with most visitors, though, is the welcome. People here fold a stranger into their day without a second thought, and you leave feeling less like a tourist than a guest.

Stories from the road

The Sundarbans safari was the trip of a lifetime. Waking to mist on the water, then a tiger on the bank.
