Three days by boat through mangrove channels, in search of the Royal Bengal tiger.
Introduction
A three-day boat journey through the Sundarbans is one of South Asia's most iconic wildlife
experiences. The Sundarbans, shared by Bangladesh and India, is the world's largest mangrove
forest and home to the famous Royal Bengal tiger.
Day 1: Entering the Mangrove Wilderness
Visitors typically depart from Khulna or Mongla and board a tourist vessel or houseboat. The
journey begins through winding rivers and dense mangrove channels. Common wildlife sightings
include spotted deer, monkeys, wild boars, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.
Day 2: Deep Inside Tiger Territory
The second day usually focuses on exploring remote creeks and protected zones. The Sundarbans
tigers are unique because they live in a saline environment and are excellent swimmers, often
crossing rivers between islands. Actual tiger sightings are rare, but the experience of traveling
through their habitat is unforgettable.
Day 3: Sunrise and Return
Early morning wildlife observation offers the best chance to see active animals and birds. After
breakfast, visitors begin the return journey while enjoying the spectacular mangrove landscape.
Wildlife of the Sundarbans
Besides the Royal Bengal tiger, the region is home to spotted deer (chital), saltwater crocodiles,
fishing cats, Irrawaddy dolphins, monitor lizards, kingfishers, eagles, and many migratory birds.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal period for a Sundarbans cruise is from October to March, particularly during the cooler
months between November and February. Monsoon travel is generally avoided because of heavy
rainfall and strong river currents.
Important Notes
Tiger sightings can never be guaranteed. Responsible tourism, respect for forest regulations, and
guidance from local experts are essential for both visitor safety and environmental conservation.
